Create a free account →Topical Studio maps a web search into a 3D space — each point is a web page, and pages that cover similar topics are placed close together. The sections below explain each area of the interface.
Basic Concepts and Navigation
Each point in the 3D viewer represents a web page returned by your search. Pages that cover similar topics cluster together — the closer two points, the more related their content. Rotate the view by clicking and dragging with the left mouse button, pan with the right mouse button, and zoom with the scroll wheel.
Left-click a point to open the web page in a new tab. Zoom in to any area and the titles of the nearest points appear beside them — a quick way to scan a dense cluster without hovering every point.
Groups of related pages are labeled with a cluster name visible in the 3D space. Hover a cluster label to highlight that group. Click a cluster label to focus and select the whole group.
Point Colors
Context Hub Card
The card in the top-left corner shows your search title, creation date, and a count of the points in the space. Hover the card to expand it and reveal three browsing tabs:
- Groups — browse all the automatically detected thematic clusters. Click any group to focus and select it in the viewer.
- Bookmarks — all pages you have bookmarked, listed for quick access. Click any entry to focus that point in the viewer.
- Notes — a free-form notepad for general observations about the search, plus all per-point notes you have added via the right-click menu. Includes a Download button to export your notes as a Markdown file.
The card header also contains two action buttons: the Reset View button, which resets the camera to its default position and clears any active selection, and — for signed-in users — the Probe button, which searches for new frontier topics based on recent developments (see Frontier Nodes below).
Top Navigation Bar
Hover at the top of the screen to reveal the toolbar. The available buttons depend on whether you are signed in:
- Help: Shows this panel.
- Create Account: Register for a free account to unlock bookmarks, notes, groups, and your own searches.
Hover Page Details
Hovering any point reveals a detail card on the right side of the screen showing the page title, source domain (with favicon), and a text snippet from the page. If you have added a note to that point, it also appears at the bottom of the card.
When a group is selected, the detail card lists all the points in that group. Hovering an entry in the list highlights the corresponding point in the viewer; clicking opens that page in a new tab.
Right-Click Menu
Right-clicking a point opens a small icon menu with the following actions:
- Focus: Centers the camera on this point and clears any other selection.
- Bookmark: Toggles a bookmark on this page. Bookmarked points turn magenta and are listed in the Bookmarks tab of the context hub.
- Edit Note: Opens an inline note editor for this specific point. Notes are visible in the hover detail card and collected in the Notes tab of the context hub.
- Select Nearby: Selects this point's nearest neighbors by spatial proximity — a quick way to grab a local cluster before creating a group.
Right-clicking a cluster label in the 3D space opens an expansion popover, letting you add new points specifically focused on that cluster's topic (see Frontier Nodes below).
Group Modal
Creating a group:
- Select points by holding Shift and dragging a rectangle, or right-click a point and choose Select Nearby to grab its spatial neighbors.
- A group card appears — type a name and click Create Group to save it.
- The new group is added to the Groups tab of the context hub and labeled in the 3D space.
Editing or removing a group:
Click a cluster label or a group in the Groups tab to select all points in that group. The group card switches to an edit view with two options: Edit Name to rename the group, or Ungroup to dissolve it and return its points to the general pool.
Frontier Nodes
Frontier nodes appear as pulsing fog areas at the edges of the point cloud. Each one marks an unexplored topic gap the system detected — a related sub-topic not yet represented in the space. Click a frontier node to expand into it, adding around 200 new points focused on that topic (5 credits).
Right-click any cluster label to manually trigger an expansion focused on that specific cluster — useful when you want to dig deeper into a topic the system has already identified.
The Probe button in the context hub card header searches for new frontier topics based on what has happened in the world since your search was built — surfacing developments, events, or angles that weren't covered at the time. It can be used once per day.
Keyword Search
Press Ctrl / ⌘ + K to open the keyword search bar. Type to filter and select points whose title or snippet contains your term — useful for locating a specific page or narrowing the selection to a theme before grouping.
Keyboard Shortcuts
- Space Toggle auto-orbit — the viewer rotates automatically to give a 360° overview of the point space.
- Ctrl/⌘+K Open the keyword search bar to filter and select points by keyword.
- Shift+drag Draw a selection rectangle to select multiple points at once.
